Kennel Cough
Kennel Cough: What Pet Owners Need to Know
If your dog has developed a dry, hacking cough, it could be kennel cough, a highly contagious respiratory infection. Kennel cough, also known as canine infectious tracheobronchitis, spreads easily in places where dogs gather, such as boarding facilities, dog parks, and grooming salons. It’s caused by a mix of viruses and bacteria, including Bordetella bronchiseptica, which is why it’s often called Bordetella.
Symptoms of Kennel Cough
• Persistent, dry cough (sometimes sounds like honking)
• Gagging or retching
• Mild fever
• Lethargy (in severe cases)
Most dogs recover within a few weeks, but puppies, senior dogs, and those with weakened immune systems may be at risk for complications like pneumonia.
The Importance of Vaccination
The Bordetella vaccine is the best way to protect your dog from kennel cough. It significantly reduces the risk of infection and severity of symptoms. Many doggy daycares and boarding facilities require this vaccination before allowing entry. The vaccine is available in an oral form here at VSL.
Preventing Kennel Cough
• Keep your dog’s vaccinations up to date.
• Avoid contact with infected dogs.
• Maintain good hygiene and clean shared dog spaces.
